This is the 18th week of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program I am participating in from June-October. This year I am getting my vegetables from Local Roots farm, a small independent organic farm just outside of Seattle.

This is the height of the harvest season, so the amount of produce I get each week (and I usually split the box with a friend, and I still have a ton) has only grown as the season goes on. This week my friend is out of town, so I have the entire box to myself.

The haul this week included carrots, parsnips, rainbow chard, baby bok choi, leeks, potatoes (including one giant potato), Delicata squash, sweet peppers and escarole.

The escarole had a little friend inside, showing that this farm truly is organic!

Do you have a CSA? What did you get this week?

We’ve been considering doing a CSA recently because I just heard about one in Dayton, but we’re not huge fans of autumnal veggies (ie squash and zucchini, yuck), and I have a hard time with the idea of having to base my cooking around my veggies, not the other way around. I think we’re going to wait until next spring/summer and then give it a try, though, because I would love to support a local farm, and we really should eat more produce than we currently do.

I would go with a CSA program that allows substitutions so that you don’t end up with a lot of stuff you guys won’t eat. Mine doesn’t allow subs but I split the box with someone with slightly different taste in veggies than I do, and the anything else I don’t like or can’t consume in such large amounts goes to my coworkers.

  2. I love it when I find bugs in my CSA foods – like you said, it shows me I’m eating real food!
